Springfield Echelon Grip Chop and Texture

Now that the Springfield Echelon 4.0C is finally out, we are now offering our grip chop service for full-size Echelon grip modules to accept the new compact 15-round and 18-round magazines. This is done with a "step cut" chop to maintain the full-size feel while giving you enhanced concealability. We offer this service with or without our texture service.

We've since updated this grip module with a grip angle correction to give it more of a 1911 grip angle as well as our Concealed Carry texture. This modification does permanently attach the back strap to the grip and a spare back strap must be sacrificed to add more material to the back of the grip.

Holsters For 2011-Style Guns

Our 1911/2011 holster mold is designed to be generic so that the holsters work with a variety of 2011-style guns. The design is specifically for slide lengths up to 4.25" with a partial or full-length railed dust cover. The holster design works for all the compact Staccatos (CS, C, and C2), as well as the older STI/Staccato 4.15" guns. It also works for wider framed guns like the Bul Amory SASII and the Springfield Prodigy 1911DS. These generic fit 2011-style holsters can be made for no weapon mounted light as well as popular compact weapon mounted lights such as the Holosun PID and the various Streamlight TLR-7 lights (A, X, and HLX). Below are examples of 2011-style holsters that fit several similarly sized guns.

2011/1911DS Grip Chop and Texture

We're now offering our grip chop service for full-size 2011-style polymer grip modules to accept compact 16-round (120mm) Staccato C2 magazines. This can be done for most brands of 2011-style polymer grip modules as well as the MJD Solutions carbon/kevlar/polymer grip module.

Unfortunately, this service is not feasible for the Bul Armory SAS II grip modules as their associated compact magazines are much shorter than the C2 magazines and the mainspring housing and the back of the grip would hang down well below the bottom of the magazine base pad. However, the shorter Bul Armory SAS II compact grip modules and magazines are readily available separately on Bul's website.

Staccato used to sell their compact and full-size Gen2 grip modules separately, but they are no longer available for purchase. The new MJD Solutions grip module is a great high quality option for a separate grip module, but it is currently only available as a full-size grip. Unlike the old discontinued STI VIP compact grip module that was just cut shorter at the factory, our grip chop retains the full-size mainspring housing by using a "step-cut" to accommodate the shorter C2 magazines. This maintains a full-size feel in the hand while enhancing concealability.

Below are some examples of 2011-style grip modules that we've chopped, chamfered, and textured with our Concealed Carry texture in a 360-degree wrap around configuration. We also added smooth borders on the bottom of the mainspring housings to match the magwell borders for a custom touch on each one, which is not a standard offering with the grip chop service.

This grip was previously done in the factory "tree bark" texture.
We also filled in the faux screw holes at the bottom of the grip for a more modern look

The Prodigy 1911DS grip module also looks good with just the grip chop

NOTE: The Prodigy 1911DS Compact 15-round magazines are 3mm shorter than Staccato C2 16-round magazines, so they will not work with our grip chop for Staccato C2 magazines. We can certainly chop a full-size Prodigy grip to accept the shorter Compact 15-round magazines, but the bottom of the back of the grip and the mainspring housing will hang down slightly farther than the bottom of magazine base pad.

IWB Holster Type - Appendix vs 3 O'clock Position

We'd like to explain the differences in our inside the waistband (IWB) holsters when made for the appendix carry position (up front) versus the 3 o'clock carry position (aka "strong-side"). While the holster shell itself is very similar, the final configuration is different for the two carry positions.

Appendix Carry Position
For the appendix carry position, the holster is typically equipped with a modified FOMI belt clip, a concealment wing (aka "claw"), and a round rubber puck on the back of the holster, which is our version of an easily removable wedge. The concealment wing rotates the grip of the gun into your body for better concealment (less printing) by leveraging against the back of the belt. The wedge tilts the back of the gun's slide in towards your body above the belt line for better concealment (less printing) and it also potentially reduces uncomfortable hotspots against your body that might be caused by any irregular or abrupt edges of the holster itself.

3 O'clock Carry Position
For the 3 o'clock carry position, the holster does not come with a concealment wing or a wedge. There would be a lot more belt tension against the concealment wing if worn at the 3 o'clock position and the increased pressure would likely cause the wing and/or the holster to crack and break. The concealment wing on an appendix carry holster cannot simply be removed to allow for 3 o'clock carry because the mounting hardware (screws and threaded posts) would be too long and you wouldn't be able to properly set the retention without the wing installed. The wedge is simply unnecessary for the 3 o'clock position and would actually be very uncomfortable if it was installed on the holster. A standard FOMI belt clip is typically mounted to the holster at a 10 to 15 degree angle via the holster's multi-position mounting holes, to facilitate a smooth draw and for better concealment (less printing).

Keep in mind that a holster made specifically for the 3 o'clock carry position can also easily be used in the appendix carry position with the belt clip mounted vertically straight, but it will lack the additional concealment benefits that you would get with a concealment wing and a wedge.

Beavertail Re-contouring

We've recently added beavertail re-contouring to our list of stippling service options. This service is primarily meant for the larger Sig Sauer X-series grip modules, but we can also do this for other handgun frames/grips if it is applicable (i.e. Walther PDP).  What we do specifically on the Sig X-series grip module is round off the bottom edge of the beavertail itself. We can also thin down the sides of the top/back of frame leading back to the beavertail as seen in the photos below. These two modifications essentially give you the same look and feel as a factory XCompact grip module in that area, which is much more comfortable in the hand and allows for a slightly higher grip on the gun.
